Saw V (2008)

SAW V (2008)

In accordance with all my other Saw reviews, as soon as I return from the midnight show the review goes up. (also keep in mind there are a few things I would like to "rip" in to about this movie but I am trying not to give away to much)

Similar to my Saw IV review DO NOT see this movie if you are not up to speed on the series, there is a lot of back tracking mainly through Saw 1, with a lot of things from Saw 2-4 thrown in there like sets that may have changed... (hint, hint).

In Saw IV fashion this movie is like a puzzle for example, the first thing you see is really some where in the middle, then the second thing is before the first. It is easier to follow than IV keeping in mind I loved Saw IV.

Blood, Guts, Gore... what more do you want from Saw? may be a "HOLY FUCK THAT JUST BLEW MY MIND" ending...

Speaking of the ending, what about the whole "you wont believe the ending" thing? here is my take, if you watch and listen... this task my be harder than you think considering is a movie... that you watch and listen to... but if you do that...to me at least the ending was no surprise, the only thing that would have surprised me would have been Jigsaw returning from the dead.

In closing, sets up for Saw VI (Halloween, 2009) in my honest opinion as a fan of the series, unless they can pull something out of there ass ( like 5 was suppose to be) I hate to say it but Saw 6 needs to be the end. Other than that, better than Saw 2 & 3, not as good as 4, no where near Saw 1.

Religulous (2008)

A must see!

From Wikipedia:

Reviews for Religulous were generally positive, with some mixed and negative reviews. The film received a "Fresh" rating of 68% at Rotten Tomatoes based on 92 reviews,[22] and a "mixed" score of 55 out of 100 at Metacritic based on 29 reviews.[23] Film critic Roger Ebert gave the film a rating of three and a half out of four stars, and wrote: "I report faithfully that I laughed frequently. You may very well hate it, but at least you've been informed. Perhaps you could enjoy the material about other religions, and tune out when yours is being discussed. That's only human nature."[24] Roger Moore of The Orlando Sentinel gave the film a rating of four out of five stars,[7] as did Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News, who characterized Religulous as "Bill Maher at his best".[25] The film received a rating of three out of four stars from Kyle Smith of the New York Post.[26] Robert W. Butler of The Kansas City Star gave the film a rating of three stars, and commented: "The film is one-sided, less a measured argument than a bunch of rants and barbed observations. But it’s also very funny, which trumps everything else."[27] Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a rating of A-, and wrote: "The movie is funny as...well, hell."[28] Steve Persall of the St. Petersburg Times also gave the film a rating of A-, and commented: "If he offends your particular faith, Maher will soon have you laughing at someone else's, wondering how 'those people' could be so gullible."[29]

The Canadian Press said the movie "delivers a laugh-out loud attack on the most sacred of cows."[30] Christie Lemire, of the Associated Press, wrote: "If you're an atheist or an agnostic, you'll be completely on board and happy to tag along with Maher as he travels the globe asking people about their faith - everywhere from Jerusalem to the Vatican to Amsterdam, where he finds not only the Cannabis Ministry but also a Muslim gay bar (with two people in it)."[31] John Anderson of Newsday wrote: "much that's funny, insightful and thought-provoking. But it certainly doesn't give the religious a lot of slack."[32] Jay Stone of Canwest News Service described the film as "hilarious, sacrilegious and exhausting".[33] Writing for Variety, Robert Koehler wrote that Maher has made a successful transition from a minor comic to a social critic: "Considering he was once a minor comic and a supporting thesp in generally awful film comedies, Maher’s transformation into one of America’s sharpest social critics is remarkable. He takes no script credit, but his periodic monologues to the camera are undeniably written, and written well."[34]

In a review for The New York Times, Stephen Holden wrote that "the movie has the same loose, on-the-road structure" as Larry Charles' previous film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and commented: "Much of Mr. Maher’s film is extremely funny in a similarly irreverent, offhanded way."[35] Claudia Puig of USA Today wrote: "those with a taste for irreverent humor and clear-eyed analysis will find it funny, enlightening and disturbing."[36] Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter characterized the film as "An often hilarious but relentlessly shallow attack on religious fundamentalism by humorist Bill Maher".[37] Louis Peitzman of the San Francisco Bay Guardian wrote that "It doesn't even matter that he goes out of his way to be offensive, as he's consistently funny enough to pull it off."[38] Scott Indrisek wrote at Style.com that: "Religulous earns many of its laughs from skillful editing, with Maher's interviews jazzed up by video clips".[39]

Some reviews have been negative. James Berardinelli wrote, "If the subject of religion is as important to Maher as he claims during his end comments, then he should have followed those words with actions and made a movie that's more than a sum of inauthentic interviews, ranting attacks, and obvious observations. The choir may hum along with Maher but the rest of those watching this movie will be singing the blues."[40] Nick Schager of Slant Magazine called it an "atheistic wannabe-dissection of modern faith" and compared it to Ben Stein's Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed in that he considered both films to have "[employed] a similar, debilitating brand of smug disingenuousness, feigning interest in discussion while arrogantly and speciously preaching in the very same manner that their subjects are ridiculed for".[41] Armond White wrote a critical review of the film in New York Press, and commented: "To scoff at the foundations of charity, justice and love that hold people together, that’s what’s ridiculous."[42] Ben Kenigsberg of Time Out New York gave the film a rating of three out of six stars, and wrote: "The worst scenes in Religulous are appalling for their methods; the best are appalling for their information."[43] Rick McGinnis of Metro gave the film low marks, concluding that "Maher is preaching to the choir with an undisguised dishonesty that only the true believers will forgive."

Max Payne (2008)

Ah, Max Payne, ever wounder what Max Payne would be like with out bullet time?

well then youve come to the right place! As you may or may not know one of the key elements of the game that Max Payne is based off of has this little feature called bullet time. we wont get in to it here the conterversy Matrix Vs Max Payne (the game) both came out at about the same time, and was great debate who came up with bullet time. Max Payne excutes it well in the game, Matrix excutes it well in the movie, Max Payne dosent excute bullet time almsot at all. There are 2 may be 3 scenes that use bullet time or something simular (just slowed down footage)

So, if you go to max payne to see something visually stunning, and simular to Sin City. I loved this movie for that and seeing some of the characters from the game come to life on the big screen. The lack of bullet time/gun battles disappointes me, there are also a few conanuity errors that I notticed for example, its snowing (lightly) Maz holds up his gun pauses for about 3 seconds then shoots, in those 3 seconds there is like an inch of snow on Max's arm and gun. in my opinion way to much time was spent on the stupid "angles" and not enough of what makes Max Payne, Max Payne

P.s. - There is an after credits scene

Art School Confidential (2006)

Wow, this is one of those movies I had never heard of, but since im in a simular situation & all... being an "art" student... I found this movie to be very relatable I also enjoyed and found the "humor" in how the students are your typical "art" students and the satire portrayed in this film.
It dose have a "corny" ending in my opinion but this is a fantastic movie.
I highly recommend this movie!

Hitman (2007)

HitmanBased on the hit Eidos video game, I have played some of the Hitman games including part of Hitman: Codename 47 (game 1) and I have completed Hitman 2: Silent Assassin & Hitman: Contracts (games 2 and 3). I love the games simply because you can’t just play them once, the game is designed so there are multiple ways to “kill” someone, you can go in guns blazing or you can sneak up on your target, even take a single shot from the roof top across town. Also in the game part of who Agent 47 is that he is a genetically engineered clone (like the Storm Troopers, Star Wars) while being an elite assassin (like Jason Bourne, Bourne Identity). The reason I bring up the Bourne Identity is because many of the reviews for this movie have compared it to the Bourne Identity. At the core they are assassin botches a job, meets girl, goes on the run with girl, and so on and so forth, but isn’t that every assassin movie?

Ever since I played Hitman: 2 Silent Assassin (the first Hitman game I played) that they should make a movie based on the game, in light of other movies based off video games I hoped that they wouldn’t F* this one up. Though I wasn’t to sure about the first choice for the role Vin Diesel he stepped down in December 2006, he did stay on and executive produce the film. Needless to say I had high hopes going in to this movie. I didn’t like about this movie was that everything was rushed, this is evident during the opening credits when “Ava Maria” is playing a credit would fade up nice and slow the quickly cut to the next scene, not to ruin the movie for any one but the opening credits is where they show you the origins of 47, they don’t do a real good job at showing that the kids are clones (if indeed they are), because during one of the fight scenes between agents you have 3 men from different races, what happened to them all being clones?

In the end Timothy Olyphant did a great gob acting as agent 47, I was really impressed. Also I like the coloring and lighting of the scenes it really brought out the red tie. Many of the camera angles were adequately positioned, in particular right before 47 enters the bathroom to kill a man the angle is of the third person view very reminiscent of the video games. I also enjoyed the plot twist at the end of this film, it was executed effectively. Killing, girls, and decent movies based off videos games I like, always a winner in my book.

Saw IV

I’m going to start off by saying as Kevin Smith said about Clerks 2 “This movie is for the fans.” I HIGHLY recommend you NOT see this movie UNLESS you have seen the first 3! You will be COMPETLY lost! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, heed my words. When leaving the theater I had this discussion with some people who were also at the premier bout how the movie “Rocked” (one kids opinion) the statement was made that you will get people who have only seen one or two or none of the other movies, they are the ones who will see this movie and say its “crap” and they will be the ones going around telling everyone its “crap” but they are just ill-informed.

Having that said lets get down to the bones of the issue, (haha bones) my Saw 3 review started out as such “This movie is so violent, brutal, sadistic, and gory and down right horrific! The shear blood in this movie will trump most war movies!...Just be prepared to turn in your seat a little.” If Saw 4 doesn’t leave you “turning in seat a lot” there is something really wrong with you. I would advise you seek immediate medical attention, because their isn’t enough room or time to help you on here. Saw 4 was a pure bloodbath the first 5 minuets of the movie they remove a mans brain, slice open his torso and rip it open, break open his rib cage, remove his stomach, then cut it open.

My only criticisms about this Saw IV are the editing and the plot. I really do hope the editing gets cleaned up for DVD release or scenes that got removed get put back in for a Unrated DVD release, most notably is one scene every one is standing in a room things are calm, then suddenly every one is standing in the hallway and people are running around everywhere. Also there is a close up of a mans face he is smiling the it jumps to him frowning; those are some of the examples I found. The plot was superb it fills the requirements for a Saw movie, (more so than Saw 2) its very Pulp Fiction like where you don’t know what the f* is going on. What I didn’t like is the big twist isn’t really explained in detail as much as everything else is in the movie, it does leave you saying “wow I didn’t see that coming” but it also leaves you saying “uh, what?” you really do get left in the dark on that one. I really like that a lot of the smaller characters in the first 3 movies have bigger parts in Saw IV. I like the usual Saw twists where your believing one thing and it’s usually another.

The visual effects for this movie remarkable, the detail that goes in to everything from the autopsy to the sets, like in the first scene every thing is kind of a really pale color their isn’t any over barring colors until they start cutting open the body then there is just red every where it is a very significant contrast.

I am a fan of the Saw movies I really liked this one because with all the other movies every time you watch it you always pick up on something new. The above are just my initial opinions of the movie, my first impressions if you will. I will most definitely be purchasing this on DVD for further analyzing, and I will certainly be anticipating the sequel Saw 5 (Saw V) set for an October 2008 release. Saw IV definitely answers a lot of questions from the first 3 movies, like “What’s on the paper Amanda reads at the end of Saw 3?” Saw 4 also raises many questions, like “What’s going on?” if Saw 5 answers as many questions as Saw 4 did I would be happy with it. Saw IV a must see if you are a fan of the series, and always remember time is an illusion.
